Distribution : SA (Western Cape); Succulent Karoo, quartz gravel flats.

 

 

Description (according to IHSP, 2003) :

 

Dwarf geophytic succulents to 1 cm tall from an oblong to depressed-globose caudex consisting of 2 to 3 fleshy horizontal to vertical roots, 1.8 - 3.5 cm long and 1.5 - 2.5 cm in diameter, with grey peeling bark and purplish-pink flesh.

 

Branches 1, to 7 mm tall and 3 - 4 mm in diameter with grey peeling bark.

 

1 leaf, sessile, appressed to the ground, dark purplish-green, orbicular-ovate, peltate, 12 - 16 x 10 - 15 mm and 8 - 10 mm thick with a deep central groove, sometimes almost hollow, surface minutely rugose, bearing sessile globose shiny white translucent glands.

 

Inflorescences : Thyrses to 4.5 cm, consisting of a single monochasium bearing 1 – 3 arcuate-ascending flowers, peduncle 2 cm, purplish-black, minutely grooved, bracts linear, acute, 1 - 2 mm, appressed, soon withering,  pedicels 18 - 25 mm. 

 

Flowers : Sepals triangular-Ianceolate, 2 x 0.75 mm, covered with dense club-shaped glandular hairs, reddish-brown, corolla tube 6 x 3 mm, pale cream to yellowish-cream, with club-shaped glandular hairs, petals 3 x 2 mm, greenish.

 

Flowering time : Mid-.to late summer.
