Distribution : Southern and eastern tropical Africa, south-western Arabian Peninsula, rocky outcrops in savanna.
Description (according to Ernst van Jaarsveld in IHSP, 2003) :
Erect branched shrubs 0,5 - 2 m, branches ascending, to 25 mm diameter at the base, with yellow-grey peeling bark.
Leaves very variable in shape and vestiture, 4 - 28 x 1 - 4,5 cm, oblanceolate to linear, upper face flat to grooved, surface glabrous, pubescent or sometimes glandular-pubescent, base cuneate, apex mucronate, petiole short, decurrent on the stem or absent.
Inflorescences erect, 20 - 60 cm with 3 - 5 dichasia, peduncle with 1 to 2 pairs of bracts 22 x 5 mm.
Flowers : Sepals green, 6 x 4 mm, corolla tubular, orange to red, 20 - 25 mm, tube 14 - 18 mm, base inflated with 5 bulges, each 5 mm long (between the sepals), petals 15 mm, recurved, stamens 27 - 36 mm, exserted for 5 - 14 mm, anthers yellow, globose.
A very variable taxon, of which several cultivars are recognized :
'Blouberg': Leaves glabrous, obovate, to 8 x 4,5 cm, margin with few large undulations. Originally from the Blouberg, Northern Cape, SA.
'Golfrand': Leaves elliptic, glabrous, 12,5 x 5 cm, margin in the upper 2/3 with small undulations.
'Langblaar': Leaves long, glabrous, linear-lanceolate, curved, shiny-green, channelled, to 25,5 x 1,5 cm, inflorescence compact, 12 - 13 cm long. Originally from the Strijdom Tunnel, Mpumalanga, SA.
'Steelpoort': Leaves hairy, oblong-obovate, green, 11,5 x 4,5 cm, upper part of the margin slightly undulate. Originally from Steelpoort, Mpumalanga, SA.

Buisson au port érigé et ramifié, 0,5 - 2 m, branches ascendantes, jusqu'à 25 mm de diamètre à la base, écorce gris-jaune s'écaillant.
Feuilles très variables en forme et couverture, 4 - 28 x 1 - 4,5 cm, oblancéolées à linéaires, face supérieure plate à canaliculée, surface glabre, pubescente ou parfois recouverte de poils glandulaires, base en forme de coin, apex mucroné, pétiole court, décurrente sur la tige ou non.
Inflorescence dressée, 20 - 60 cm avec 3 - 5 dichasia, pédoncule comportant 1 à 2 paires de bractées 22 x 5 mm.
Fleurs : Sépales verts, 6 x 4 mm, corolle tubulaire, orange ou rouge, 20 - 25 mm, tube 14 - 18 mm, base enflée composée de 5 boursouflures, chacune mesurant 5 mm de long (entre les sépales), pétales 15 mm, recourbés, étamines 27 - 36 mm, dépassant de 5 - 14 mm, anthères jaunes et globulaires.
Un taxon vraiment très variable, dont nous reconnaissons de nombreux cultivars :
'Blouberg' : feuilles glabres, obovales, de 8 x 4,5 cm, avec peu de grandes ondulations sur les marges. Originaire du Blouberg, Cap-Nord, Afrique du Sud.
'Golfrand' : feuilles elliptiques, glabres, 12,5 x 5 cm, marges avec petites ondulations dans les 2/3 supérieurs.
'Langblaar' : longues feuilles, glabres, linéaires-lancéolées, courbées, vert brillant, canaliculées, 25,5 x 1,5 cm, inflorescence compact, 12 - 13 cm de long. Originaire du tunnel de Strijdom, Mpumalanga, Afrique du Sud.
'Steelpoort' : feuilles velues, oblongues-obovales, vertes, 11,5 x 4,5 cm, partie supérieure des marges légèrement ondulée. Originaire de Steelpoort, Mpumalanga, Afrique du Sud.
