FLANAGANII ssp. FLANAGANII

Distribution : Restricted to the hills around the lower Kei River in the eastern Cape Province, where it is growing on gravelly slopes in scrub vegetation.

 

 

Description by Tölken, 1979 :

 

Shrubs with spreading branches up to 1 m high, including inflorescence, sparsely branched.

 

Branches with pale bark, 6 – 10 mm in diam. when bearing leaves, rigid and somewhat woody (not shrivelled when dry).

 

Leaves in whorls of 3, linear, (60-) 70 – 90 mm long, (3-) 4 – 8 mm in diameter, terete, scarcely widened in the middle, tapering into a sharp point, green to grey.

 

Inflorescence a thyrse with peduncle 0.25 – 0.4 m long, with bracts in 1 or 2 whorls of often scattered singly along peduncle.

 

Corolla red, often pinkish red due to a thick bloom, tube cylindrical, 12 – 15 mm long, petals 10 – 14 mm long, narrowly oblong, acute, recoiled, anthers 2 – 2.5 mm long.

 

Flowering period : November – January.
