TETRAGONA ssp. ROBUSTA  (Tölken) Tölken, 1975

Distribution : SA : Growing on dry slopes in sheltered valleys among shrub vegetation; in eastern Cape Province, mainly along Fish River, Sundays River and Groot River valleys.

Description by Tölken, 1985 :

Plants erect and often fastigiate, 30 – 50 (- 100) cm high, usually moderately branched, with carnose main branches 5 – 15 (- 20) mm in diameter at base, with flaking bark.

Leaves (15 -) 20 – 30 (- 40) mm long, 3 – 5 (- 6) mm broad, with blunt apices, curved upwards, rarely spreading,

with old leaves deciduous; sheath 0.5 – 1 mm long.

Inflorescence a round-topped thyrse with many dichasia, with indistinct peduncle having (0 -) 1 pair of bracts without flowers.

Corolla 1.5 – 2.5 mm long, dorsally ridged along lobes.

Flowering period (December) January – March.

 

Cytology : 2n = 48

 

Note :

Ssp. robusta – as the name implies – is a very robust plant and has been introduced in Europe already in the early 18th century.
