LITOREUM var. CRETICUM  't Hart, 2002

Synonyms :

Sedum praesidis  Runemark & Greuter (1981) / Sedum litoreum ssp. praesidis  (Runemark & Greuter) Greuter (1992).

 

Distribution : Greece (Crete, recently also reported from Armathia Island in the Karpathos group).

 

 

Description (according to 't Hart & Bleij in IHSP 2003) :

 

FIowers outbreeding with 10 stamens and superior ovary, sepals connate only at the very base, petals 4-6 mm, anthers oblong, large, bright red (rarely yellow).

 

Cytology: 2n = 20

 

 

Generally, var. creticum prefers less exposed, more mesic or shaded habitats, but the 2 varieties often occur in close proximity or even in mixed stands.

 

The Cretan variety was described by 't Hart as being different to the widespread species found right across the Mediterranean.
