Distribution : SA (Western Cape, Eastern Cape), subtropical thickets.

 

 

Description (according to Tölken, 1985, and IHSP, 2003) :

 

Erect branched shrubs to 1,20 m.

 

Branches woody, with peeling bark, young branches green, succulent.

 

Leaves opposite, oblanceolate to obovate, (20-) 23 - 27 (-32) x 6 - 12 (-15) mm, with cuneate or subpetiolate base, acute, cuspidate or rarely obtuse, dorsiventrally compressed but somewhat convex on both surfaces, glabrous, with flaking wax (silvery flakes on dried material), usually deep green or glaucous and sometimes with a reddish margin towards apex, glabrous or occasionally glandular-hairy.

 

Inflorescence a dichasium with 1 (2, 3) flowers, peduncle (5-) 10 - 30 (-50) mm long, glabrous, pedicels 8 – 10 mm.

 

Flowers : Sepals triangular, 3.5 - 4.5 (-6) mm long, acute, glabrous, corolla deep red to orange, tube almost cylindrical, 12 - 15 mm long, 11 – 15 mm in diameter at the base, glabrous except for a tuft of hairs where filaments are fused to tube on inside, petals lanceolate to ovate, recurved, rarely recoiled, stamens exserted for 3 and 6 mm respectively, anthers yellow, oblong, 2,5 mm.

 

Flowering time mainly December to April, but flowers are found almost at any time of the year when rain has fallen.

Distribution : Afrique du Sud (Cap-Occidental, Cap-Oriental), fourrés subtropicaux.

 

 

Description (selon Tölken, 1985, et IHSP, 2003) :

 

Buisson érigé, ramifié, jusqu'à 1,20 m.

 

Branches ligneuses, avec écorce s'écaillant, jeunes branches vertes, succulentes.

 

Feuilles opposées, oblancéolées à obovales (20-) 23 - 27 (-32) x 6 - 12 (-15) mm, avec base en forme de coin ou presque pétiolée, pointues ou rarement obtuses, aux deux côtés bombés, quelque peu convexes, recouvertes d'une cire s'écaillant (écailles argentées sur feuilles séchées) habituellement vertes ou glauques et parfois avec une marge rougeâtre vers l'apex, glabres ou occasionnellement avec des poils glandulaires. 

 

Inflorescence un dichasium de 1 (2, 3) fleurs, pédoncule (5-) 10 - 30 (-50) mm de long, glabre, pédicelles : 8 – 10 mm.

 

Fleurs : Sépales triangulaires, 3,5 - 4,5 (-6) mm de long, pointus, glabres, corolle rouge vif à orange, tube presque cylindrique, 12 - 15 mm de long, 11 – 15 mm de diamètre, glabre (à l'exception d'une touffe de poils à l'endroit où les filaments des étamines sont soudés au tube, à l'intérieur), pétales lancéolés à ovales, recourbés, rarement enroulés, étamines dépassant de 3 et 6 mm respectivement, anthères jaunes et oblongues, 2,5 mm.

 

Fleurit essentiellement entre décembre et avril, dans l'habitat, mais des fleurs peuvent apparaître à tout moment de l'année après une bonne pluie.
