Type : José Piccardo s.n., collected Aug 16, 1958, Dept. Rosario de Lerma, Prov. Salta, Argentina.

Distribution : Dept. Rosario de Lerma, Prov. Salta, Argentina, found only at the so-called "Quebrada del Toro", SW of the city of Salta, along the valley of Lerma, 2050 - 2350 m.

 

Description :

A succulent, glabrous herb.

Roots widely tuberous.

Stem short, simple, 0.5 - 3.5 (-7) cm long.

Rosette generally simple, 2.5 - 6 (-10) cm in diameter.

Leaves 10 - 16, narrowly obovate to oblong, 1.5 - 4 (-5) cm long, 1.1 - 1.6 cm wide atmiddle, 1.5 - 2.5 mm thick, upper side flat to slightly concave to subcanaliculate, lower side subcarinate, apex obtuse to cuspidate, light grayish green to glaucous, reddish at keel and margins near tip.

Flowering stem a lateral raceme, 25 - 35 cm long, dark red, bracts narrowly lanceolate, 1 - 1.8 cm long, 3 - 7 mm wide, light green-glaucous, pedicels 0.8 - 1.8 cm long with 1 - 2 small bractlets at the middle, pink.

Flowers 6 - 12, sepals united at base, unequal, 5 - 7 mm long, light green, reddish at tips, corolla urceolate, pyramidal, 1.4 - 1.7 cm long and 0.8 - 0.9 cm wide near base, 0.1 - 0.4 cm wide at apex, orangish yellow to cream yelloe below, yellow above.

Flowering time : January to late February.

Note :

Echeveria argentinensis var. kieslingii differs from the type as follows :

- Plants are slightly smaller.

- leaves are more numerous and more glaucous,

- scape is slightly shorter and narrower and has less flowers,

- flowers are mostly pure yellow and

- plants are flowering earlier.
