Type : Bauml & Voss 1932, collected east of mesa of San Andrés Cohamiata, Mun. Mezquitic, Jalisco, 1800 m, 1987. HBG 60269.

 

Etymology : Named for the sepals which are longer than in the other variety.

 

Distribution: Mexico (Jalisco: East of table mountain of San Andrés Cohamiata), 1800 m.

 

 

First Description by Kimnach in Haseltonia 5: 51. 1997 :

 

Stems to 80 cm tall or more, sparsely branching, 7 - 10 mm thick.

 

Leaves diffuse, spaced 0.5 - 1 cm apart, obovate to oblanceolate, apex sharply recurving, mucronate, 3 - 4 cm long, 15 - 20 mm wide at widest part (ca 1.5 cm from apex), 4 - 5 mm wide at base, 3 - 4 mm thick, nearly glabrous but with minute rounded papillae hardly detectable by touch, green, rarely slightly reddish at margin and apex, both surfaces convex near base, flat at middle, slightly grooved or concave near apex.

 

Flowering stem to 50 cm long, inflorescence 3 - 6 cm long, 5 - 6- flowered, pedicels 6 - 10 mm long.

 

Flowers : Sepals widely expanding, to 18 mm long, green, corolla 18 mm long, orange-red.

                                                                                                                                                

This variety differs from var. pringlei in its tall, erect stems, larger, nearly smmooth leaves and longer sepals.
