Echeveria

SEMIVESTITA var. FLORESIANA Walther, 1958

Type : Cultivated in Strybing Arboretum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco (CAS 332306). Originally collected by R. Flores along road from Antiguo Morelos to San Luis Potosí.

 

Etymology : Named for its collector, R. Flores.

 

Distribution : Mexico (San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas ?)

 

 

Description by E. Walther in Cactus and Succulent Journal US 30: 109. 1958 :

 

Similar to var. semivestita except that plants are wholly glabrous in all their parts ;

 

caudex evident with age, usually simple ;

 

leaves often minutely undulate at lower margins ;

 

lower bracts straight, ascending, 30 to 35 mm long ;

 

nectaries to 2 mm wide.

Note :

 

1. Walther wrote (Echeveria, 1972) :"The two forms of E. semivestita agree in practically every detail, except the sole character of hairiness […] which is a very minor matter". Why nevertheless he published floresiana as a var. and not as a form we are not told. In any case the classification of the glabrous plant as a variety is highly questionable in view of the fact that - according to Charles Uhl - hairy as well as glabrous plants are growing at the same place in the region of the type collection of E. semivestita (letter to Moran 29 December 1970). 

 

2. The plant on the photo Fig. 349. p. 250 in Pilbeam, The genus Echeveria, 2008, lacks the characteristic undulate leaf margins and therefore is doubtful.
