Glauca Haage & Schmidt

Origin unknown, named by Haage & Schmidt in their 1926 catalogue.

Parentage : Pachyphytum hookeri x Echeveria spec.

Synonym : xPachyveria haagei, an invalid name.



xPachyveria 'Glauca' & xPachyveria 'Bea'

xPachyveria ‚Glauca‘ is an old hybrid, first put on the market in 1926  by Haage & Schmidt, the parentage given as Pachyphytum hookeri x Echeveria spec. 

In his article “Echeveria Hybrids” (CSJ US, 1934, pp.53-56) Eric Walther has listed it with the same parentage.

Almost 30 years later, in 1962, J.C. van Keppel has published an article on xPachyveria ‘Glauca’ (Succulenta  1962, n° 4) discussing the parentage of this hybrid. For him the Pachyphytum parent clearly is not P. hookeri but P. compactum because – as he says - the leaves of his plant show faint netlike markings resembling those of P. compactum.

Of course a hybrid with P. hookeri would not have such markings. As it seems unlikely that Haage & Schmidt erred concerning the parentage of their hybrid, the conclusion is obvious that Van Keppel did not know and not grow the original Haage & Schmidt hybrid.  Instead of realizing that a plant with faceted leaves could not be the true xP. ‘Glauca’, he “corrected” the original parentage and thus attributed this name to a different hybrid. This means that the name ‘Glauca’ has been attached to two different crossings– P. hookeri x E. spec.  Haage & Schmidt and P. compactum x E. spec., the plant of Van Keppel.

As the name Glauca had been given to a crossing with P. hookeri, hybrids with P. compactum must be renamed and will be called xPachyveria ‘Bea’ – in honor of Beatriz Prestamo, much engaged in introducing succulents in Argentina at the end of the last century.

xPachyveria 'Glauca' est un hybride ancien, mis sur le marché en 1926 par  Haage & Schmidt, la parenté étant donnée comme Pachyphytum hookeri x Echeveria spec. Il est très probablement issue de leur nursery.

Presque 30 ans après, en 1962, J.C. Van Keppel a publié un article sur xPachyveria ‘Glauca’ (Succulenta  1962, n° 4), discutant la parenté de cet hybride. Selon lui le Pachyphytum parent n'est clairement pas P. hookeri mais P. compactum car - comme il le dit lui-même - les feuilles de sa plante montrent de faibles marques réticulaires ressemblantes à celles de P. compactum.

Bien sûr, un hybride avec P. hookeri n'aurait pas ce genre de marques. Comme il parait peu probable que Haage & Schmidt aient fait une erreur concernant la parenté de leur hybride, la conclusion est évidente, van Keppel ne connaissait pas et ne cultivait pas l'hybride de Haage & Schmidt.

Au lieu de réaliser que la plante avec des feuilles “à facettes” ne pouvait pas être le vrai x Pachyveria 'Glauca', il “corrigea” la parenté originelle et du coup, donna ce nom à un hybride différent.

Cela veut dire que le nom 'Glauca' a été attribué à deux hybrides différents, P. hookeri x E. spec.  Haage & Schmidt et P. compactum x E. spec., la plante de van Keppel.

Le nom 'Glauca' ayant été donné à un croisement avec P. hookeri, les hybrides avec compactum doivent être renommés et seront appellés xPachyveria ‘Bea’- en l'honneur de Beatriz Prestamo, dont l'engagement à permis d'introduire des succulentes en Argentine, à la fin du siècle dernier.

x Pachyveria ‘Glauca’ es un antiguo híbrido, introducido en el mercado en 1926 por Haage & Schmidt, con parentales descriptos como Pachyphytum hookeri x Echeveria spec. Lo más probable es que se haya originado en su vivero. En su artículo “Echeveria Hybrids” (CSJ US, 1934, pp.53-56) Eric Walter la catalogó con los mismos parentales.

Casi 30 años más tarde, en 1962, J.C. Van Keppel publicó un artículo sobre x Pachyveria ‘Glauca’ (Succulenta 1962 n° 4) donde discute la paternidad de este híbrido. Para él, el padre Pachyphytum claramente no era P. hookeri sino P. compactum, porque -como lo expresa-  las hojas de sus plantas muestran débiles marcas en forma de red similares a las de P. compactum.

Por supuesto, un híbrido P. hookeri no tendría tales marcas. Como parece poco probable que Haage & Schmidt se hayan equivocado en el parentesco de su híbrido, la conclusión obvia es que Van Keppel no conocía y tampoco cultivaba el original híbrido Haage & Schmidt. En lugar de comprender que una planta con hojas facetadas no podía ser la verdadera x Pachyveria ‘Glauca’, él “corrigió” el parentesco original y así atribuyó este nombre a un híbrido diferente. Esto quiere decir que el nombre ‘Glauca’ fue asignado a dos cruzamientos diferentes - P. hookeri x E. spec. Haage & Schmidt y P. compactum x E. spec., el ejemplar de Van Keppel.

Dado que el nombre ‘Glauca’ ha sido asignado a un cruzamiento con P. hookeri, los híbridos con P. compactum deben ser renombrados y serán denominados  xPachyveria ‘Bea’ – en honor a Beatriz Prestamo, muy comprometida en la introducción de suculentas en la Argentina a finales del siglo pasado.
