Distribution : S Namibia, SA (Northern Cape); winter-rainfall regions, Succulent Karoo.
Description (according to IHSP, 2003) :
Erect robust pachycaul shrubs to 2.5 m with a rounded crown, usually well-branched with a single main trunk to ± 40 cm in diameter.
Roots fibrous.
Stem : Bark smooth, peeling in semitranslucent yellowish-brown horizontal strips exposing the green fleshy stem.
Branches softly fleshy and brittle, young branches with greyish-green bark.
Leaves ascending-spreading, flat to somewhat channeled, glabrous or densely hairy on young plants, 5 - 9 x 2 - 4 cm, elliptic, ovate to oblanceolate, grass-green, rarely glaucous, margin entire, sometimes wavy, base cuneate, apex rounded to obtuse; leaf rudiments at branch tips triangular, 3 x 2 mm, soon becoming brown and withering.
Inflorescences ascending thyrses to 40 cm with 3 - 6 monochasia; peduncle reddish, bracts 15 - 20 x 3 - 5 mm.
Flowers spreading to subnutant, corolla tubular, orange-yellow to red, to 20 x 8 mm in diameter, glandular-hairy on the outside or glabrous, petals spreading, becoming reflexed.
Flowering time : Late spring to mid-summer.

Buisson pachycaule érigé et robuste, atteignant 2,5 m, avec une ramure arrondie, habituellement bien ramifiée, avec un seul tronc principal de ± 40 cm de diamètre.
Racines fibreuses.
Tige : Écorce lisse, s'exfoliant en bandes horizontales marron jaunâtre semi-translucides, mettant en évidence la tige charnue verte.
Branches légèrement charnues et fragiles, les jeunes branches ayant une écorce vert grisâtre.
Feuilles ascendantes-écartées, plates à quelque peu canaliculées, glabres ou densément velues chez les jeunes plantes, 5 - 9 x 2 - 4 cm, elliptiques, ovales à oblancéolées, vert herbe, rarement pruineuses, marge entière, parfois ondulées, base cunée, apex arrondi à obtus ; les feuilles rudimentaires à l'extrémité des branches étant triangulaires, 3 x 2 mm, devenant bientôt marron et se fanant.
Inflorescences en thyrses ascendants jusqu'à 40 cm, avec 3 - 6 monochasia ; pédoncule rougeâtre, bractées 15 - 20 x 3 - 5 mm.
Fleurs écartées à presque inclinées, corolle tubulaire, jaune orangé à rouge, jusqu'à 20 x 8 mm de diamètre, avec poils glandulifères à l'extérieur ou glabres, pétales écartés, devenant recourbés.
Période de floraison : Fin de printemps - début d'été.
