Aeonium

STUESSYI   H.-Y. Liu, 1989   (engl./ fr.)

Section Aeonium

Distribution : E Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania) ; common on trees, occasionally on rocks, 2000 - 3000 m.

Description (according to H.-Y. Liu, 1989, and R. Nyffeler in IHSP, 2003) :

Perennial epiphytic few-branched subshrubs to 2 m.

Branches ascending to decumbent, often in groups, 1 - 2 cm thick, glabrous, smooth, bark fissured irregularly, leaf scars distinct.

Rosette 10 - 20 cm in diameter, centre flattened with young leaves tightly appressed to each other.

Leaves 5 - 12 x 2.5 - 3.5 cm, 3 - 5 mm thick, oblanceolate- to obovate-spatulate, apically acute or acuminate, basally cuneate, puberulent, margin with straight or curved cilia (0.4 - 1.0 mm), yellowish-green to dark green, usually reddish variegated along margin.

Inflorescence 8 - 18 x 8 - 18 cm, peduncle 3 - 15 cm, pedicels 1 - 6 mm, sparsely puberulent.

Flowers 7- to 11-merous, sepals 2 - 3 x 1.5 - 2 mm, sparsely puberulent, green, sometimes variegated with reddisch midvein, petals 7 - 8 x 1.5 - 2.5 mm, obovate or elliptic, glabrous, retuse, yellow, with reddish lines, filaments glabrous, anthers yellow.

Flowering time : August - April.

Aeonium stuessyi is related to A. leucoblepharum, main distinction : The former is puberulent, the latter is glabrous.

Note :

Neither the description of A. leucoblepharum nor that of A. stuessyi mention a red midstripe on the leaf surface. Therefore it is not clear whether the name A. leucoblepharum applies to the green-leaved plant or the plant with a red midstripe. Plants with a red midstripe have been found in Yemen as well as in Ethiopia, while green-leaved plants are occurring in Kenya and other east African countries. If plants with a red midstripe are considered Aleucoblepharum, the green-leaved plants, first collected in Kenya, represent A. stuessyi. If however the type of Aleucoblepharum is a green-leaved plant, the name A. stuessyi becomes a synonym of A. leucoblepharum and the plant with the red midstripe is a still not described species.
