Distribution : Himalaya (Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan), Tibet, south-western China (north-western Sichuan, Yunnan),forests, scrub, slopes, 3700 - 4200 m.

Description (according to H. Ohba in IHSP, 2003) :

Dioecious, to 50 cm tall.

Rhizomes cylindrical, 2 - 4 cm in diameter, to 40 cm long, creeping except the ascending upper part.

Flowering stems 12 - 25, fastigiate, reddish, densely papillate, the remains of old stems reddish-brown.

Leaves spreading, sessile, oblong-oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, 6 - 20 x 2.5 – 7 mm, tip obtuse or acute, base attenuate, margin remotely and irregularly crenulate-denticulate or nearly entire, dark or deep green above, slightly glaucous or pale green beneath, densely papillate along rnargin.

Inflorescences 10- to 50-flowered, 2.5 - 4 cm (male) or 4 - 10 cm (female) in diameter, pedicels 0.8 - 3 mm, papillate, reddish.

FIowers 6 - 8 mm (male) or 4 - 5 mm (female) in diameter,calyx 4 - 5.5 mm, glabrous, tube 2 – 3.5 mm, sepals 1.5 - 3 mm, narrowly triangular or subulate, petals dark red-purple, oblong-ovate or narrowly oblong-ovate, 2.5 - 4.5 mm, spreading (male) or suberect (female),stamens shorter than the petals, anthers deep red-purple.

Flowering time : Mid-June to August.
