Description :

Perennial herbs with rosettes.

Roots with nodule-like structures.

Rosulate leaves succulent, to 2 cm long and 5 mm wide, apically serrate, teeth acute-spinulose, base cuneate, densely papillate, brownish green.

Flowering stem from center of  a rosette, straight, 5 -23 cm tall, sparsely papillate, brownish.

Cauline leaves alternate, succulent, 1.5 - 2.5 cm long and 3 - 6 mm wide, apically serrate (teeth acute-spinulose), base cuneate, densely papillate, fallen leaves rooting at the base.

Inflorescences cymes with nearly flat top, 5 - 30-flowered, bracteate or ebracteate, bracts to 1.5 cm long, linear, pedicels 1 - 5 (-8) mm long.

Flowers : Calyx tube less than 1 mm long, sepals 3 - 4 mm long, spurless, apex obtuse, erect at flowering, minutely papillate, brownish red, petals linear-subulate, 5 - 5.5 mm long and 1.5 - 2 mm wide, erect throughout flowering, apex obtuse, reflexed, minutely papillate, outside red, inside white except red apex, stamens 5, anthers purple, ovaries not swollen dorsally.

Flowering time : July - August

 

Note :

Var. spinulosa differs from S. paoshingensis by its serrate leaves which are not easily detached and the obtuse (not apiculate) apex of the petals.
