GIBBIFLORA 'Caronculata'  De Smet

Synonyms :

Echeveria gibbiflora var. metallica carunculata  van Laren, 1932

Echeveria carunculata hort.

Echeveria grandifolia 'Blister Leaf'  E.Walther, 1972

Taxonomic history of Echeveria gibbiflora 'Caronculata'.

Note :

1. The first to describe this plant was not van Laren (Vetplanten, p. 74, 1932, as E. gibbiflora var. metallica carunculata) as indicated by Kimnach in the Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants, p.112, 2003. The First Description had already been published more than 50 years earlier by the Belgian nurseryman Louis de Smet in his 1879 catalogue, and as De Smet's description was in French, the name of the plant was Echeveria caronculata. Therefore the correct name of this plant is Echeveria gibbiflora 'Caronculata' and not E. gibbiflora 'Carunculata'.

2. Jacobsen, Das Sukkulentenlexikon : 168, t. 58(3), 1970 listed E. caronculata as a cultivar of E. gibbiflora. Kimnach's own publication of E. caronculata as a cultivar of E. gibbiflora (Cactus and Succulent Journal US 70(6):300, 1998) is superfluous and can only be explained by insufficient research.
