Distribution : Madagascar, now widely distributed as a garden escape throughout the tropics of Africa, Asia and America.
Description (according to B. Descoings in IHSP, 2003) :
Perennials, entirely glabrous, to 2 m tall.
Stems stout, erect.
Leaves petiolate, first simple, later pinnate to 3- to 5-foliate, leathery-fleshy, green, streaked with purple, edged with orange-red, petiole 2.5 - 7.5 cm, broadened towards the base and amplexicaul; lamina of simple leaves ovate to oblong, to 10 x 5 cm, tip obtuse, base cuneate to truncate, margins crenate-serrate, with propagules produced from the sinuses; compound leaves 6 - 20 x 4 - 12 cm, leaflets ± similar to simple leaves or oblong-circular.
Inflorescences lax many-flowered panicles, pedicels 10 - 12 mm.
Flowers pendent, calyx campanulate, green with red to violet lines, tube 20 - 30 mm, sepals ovate-triangular, acute-acuminate, 7 - 11 mm long and wide, corolla ± cylindrical, green below, red to greenish-reddish above, tube 25 - 40 mm, petals oblong-ovate to triangular, acute, 9 - 14 x 4 - 6.5 mm, stamens included.
Cytology : 2n = 36, (38 ?), 40
This is the best-known species of the genus. It is certainly native to Madagascar, as it is a typical member of the Madagascan section Bryophyllum. Today, it is found cultivated and as neophyte throughout the tropics of the world.

Distribution : Madagascar, maintenant largement distribuée et s'échappant des jardins dans les régions tropicales d'Afrique, d'Asie et d'Amérique.
Description (selon B. Descoings dans IHSP, 2003) :
Plante vivace entièrement glabre, jusqu'à 2 m de haut.
Tiges épaisses, dressées.
Feuilles pétiolées, d'abord simples, plus tard pennées à tri-/quinquéfoliées, parcheminées-charnues, striées de violet, bordées de rouge orangé, pétiole de 2,5 - 7,5 cm, élargi vers la base et amplexicaule ; limbe des feuilles simples ovale à oblong, jusqu'à 10 x 5 cm, extrémité obtuse, base cunée à tronquée, marges crénelées-dentées en scie, avec plantules produites dans les sinus (creux) ; feuilles composées 6 - 20 x 4 - 12 cm, folioles ± similaires aux feuilles simples ou oblongues-circulaires.
Inflorescences en lâches panicules très fleuris, pédicelles de 10 - 12 mm.
Fleurs pendantes, calice campanulé, vert avec lignes rouges à violettes, tube de 20 - 30 mm, sépales ovales-triangulaires, aigus-acuminés, 7 - 11 mm de long et de large, corolle ± cylindrique, verte en bas, rouge à rouge verdâtre en haut, tube de 25 - 40 mm, pétales oblongs-ovales à triangulaires, aigus, 9 - 14 x 4 - 6,5 mm, étamines incluses.
Cytologie : 2n = 36, (38 ?), 40
C'est l'espèce la plus connue du genre. Elle est certainement originaire de Madagascar, puisqu'il s'agit d'un représentant typique de la section malgache Bryophyllum. Aujourd'hui, elle se trouve en culture et en tant que néophyte à travers les tropiques du monde entier.
