PORPHYROCALYX 'Wendy'  (engl./ fr.)

PROBABLY NOT A HYBRID BUT RATHER A CULTIVAR !   See Note below !

Description (according to European Garden Flora, 1989) :

Shrublet to 40 cm, semi-erect, with very few fine simple hairs only in the inflorescences.

Stems soon thickening and epidermis separating into plates.

Leaves ovate to oblong-lanceolate with uneven, shallow, rounded teeth, 4 – 7 x 1 - 2.5 cm, tapered at base; stalk indistinct.

Stem of inflorescence usually 3-branched from base with 15 - 30 pendent flowers.

Flowers : Corolla urn-shaped, tube rose-purple, ca. 2.3 x 1.3 cm, lobes ovate, yellow, 5 – 6 mm, anthers and styles just projecting from corolla-tube, filaments fused to corolla for ca. 5 mm.

Similar to K. porphyrocalyx, but coarser and more floriferous when grown in similar conditions. Sometimes self-fertilised, seedlings very variable. 

Note :

European Gardenflora, 1989 considers ‘Wendy’ a hybrid of Kalanchoe miniata x K. porphyrocalyx. However in Phytotaxa 478 (2): 225-238, 2021, Smith & Shtein express doubts regarding the hybrid status of ‘Wendy’ because of its similarity to the species K. porphyrocalyx and prefer to consider it a culivar of the latter which seems plausible. ‘The nursery name ‘Pearl Bells’ seems to refer to plants identical with K. porphyrocalyx ‘Wendy’.

Description (selon European Garden Flora) :

Buisson atteignant 40 cm, semi-érigé, avec très peu de poils fins et simples seulement sur les inflorescences.

Tiges s'épaississant rapidement, avec épiderme se décollant par plaques.

Feuilles ovales à oblongues-lancéolées avec dents arrondies, superficielles et inégales, 4 – 7 x 1 - 2,5 cm, atténuées à la base ; pétiole indistinct.

Tige de l'inflorescence habituellement avec trois branches à partir de la base, portant 15 - 30 fleurs pendantes.

Fleurs : Corolle urcéolée, tube rose-violet, environ 2,3 x 2,3 cm, lobes ovales, jaunes, 5 – 6 mm, anthères et styles dépassant juste du tube de la corolle, filaments soudés à la corolle sur environ 5 mm.

Semblable à K. porphyrocalyx, mais plus grossier et plus florifère quand il est cultivé dans les mêmes conditions. Parfois auto-fertilisé ; semis très variables.
