Description (according to 't Hart, Bleij & Zonneveld IHSP, 2003) :
Pubescent or glabrous, with a thick, shortly branched or lobed rootstock.
Rosettes flattish, open, 3 – 12 m in diameter, reproducing vegetatively by sessile offsets around the centre.
Leaves oblong-obovate, spinose-mucronate, with stiff, often deflexed cilia, both faces convex, spreading, light, dark or glaucous green, sometimes with white margins, 20 - 60 x 10 – 15 mm.
Flowering branches 10 - 20 cm, often glabrous.
Leaves with broad clasping base, lanceolate, acuminate, purple-tipped.10 - 30 mm.
Inflorescence dense cymes with 3 forked cincinni.
FIowers 6- (to 7-) merous, sepals connate for up to 2.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, acute, greenish-yellow, often red-tipped, erect, 6 - 10 mm, petals oblong-obovate, ususally tricuspidate, ciliate, scarcely fimbriate, carinate, yellow or yellowish white, erect, 10 - 12 mm, filaments pale yellow, anthers deep yellow.
Cytology : 2n = 38
Variable in the degree of pubescence as well as in the size and coloration of the leaves. The glabrous form appears to be more common. A glabrous form with connate cilia was described as S. velenovskyi.
